About GPRS

What is it?

  • G eneral Packet Radio Services (GPRS)
  • "Always On" connection
  • Usage charges based on data sent/received, not the time connected
  • Being packet based, the system is dynamic, the effective data rate depends on the number of channels available and number of GPRS users at any one time
  • Different equipment also makes use of different numbers of data channels (e.g. 3+1, 4+1, current max 4+4)
  • Maximum data throughput is 53.6Kbps
How does it work?

  • One time slot per cell id dedicated to GPRS - not all operators have this
  • A further 3 time slots can be allocated to GPRS if not in use for voice/CSD
  • Each time slot can provide a data rate of 13.4Kbps
  • The maximum achievable throughput is 53.6Kbps (4 x 13.4Kbps)
How does GPRS operate with the Cable & Wireless VPN Solution

  • The Cable & Wireless VPN Solution uses the public internet to connect NHS remote workers to NHSnet.
  • GPRS can be used as that internet access for mobile workers just as others use Broadband Internet from home.
